Your Own Parent Report Card?

Child smiling while holding a report card

We’ve reached that time of the year. When teachers are sending out report cards home and you are sifting through the first page to find out exactly how to read their results. This assessment of your child can almost feel like an assessment of yourself—but hang on now…it’s not!

There may be fragments of a reflection of the character building and moral codes you instill in your children, but ultimately, it’s a reflection of the child and how they are applying all that they are being taught—bits and pieces of home, but mostly at school.

A good school will share with you a holistic assessment of your child—not just their academics. This would be how they interact with other children, their personalities, and how it either helps or hinders their progress. Let’s not forget that it would have ‘Next steps’—what the school desires to work on next year.

‘Next steps’ involves you too! How can you as a parent help them with their ‘next steps’ and also change some of their challenges to strengths?

To be honest though, I am here to outline that this school report is an assessment of your child by the teacher—have you ever thought about your OWN assessment at home of your child? And is your child also assessing YOU?

Did you just chuckle?

Yes, it’s worth a chuckle over, but doing a family assessment is just as important as your child’s school report. We receive a report for everything, really! Electricity report, MOT, etc.

How about a fun family assessment where the children get to hear how YOU think they are doing and ‘next steps’?

Such an evaluation will help to encourage open and honest conversations, and your children will feel like they have a voice in helping you understand how they see the family. Also, it will no doubt build trust and strengthen the relationship.

You as a parent get to identify their strengths and areas for growth—and guess what? They also get to identify YOUR areas of strength and areas for growth!

Knowing that they will be participating in a fun family assessment will encourage them to reflect on their actions and how they affect others. They could start to become accountable and responsible and experience shared ownership of the family’s well-being!
