Do Affirmations (for your child) Really Work?

Affirmations for Kids

I am sure you have heard the term ‘affirmations’ floating around, whether it’s on social media, on the radio or in a movie.

But what is it really?

Well, a reliable source (Cough: Wikipedia) says that:

“Affirmations refer primarily to the practice of positive thinking and self-empowerment—fostering a belief that “a positive mental attitude supported by affirmations will achieve success in anything.”

What is the effect of positive thinking in parenting? Could there be something significantly impactful about affirming yourself or affirming your kids?

The answer is an emphatic yes!

Let’s start with the CHILD:

CONFIDENCE!

Let’s think of it as building a house. The first thing to do is lay a strong foundation, and positive affirmations serve as building blocks for a child’s self-confidence. What we say to our children becomes an important part of their inner thoughts and acts to trigger reminders of their strengths and abilities.

When you guide your child to repeat affirmations like “I am capable”, “I am strong”, or “I believe in myself”, you’re helping them construct a sense of self-worth.

SELFIMAGE & IDENTITY

Positive affirmations are really just tools that help your child develop a strong self-image. Saying it over and over reinforces the notion that they possess inherent qualities that contribute to their capabilities. This is like reinforcing the foundation of a house, ensuring its stability and durability.

ENCOURAGEMENT

They act as a source of encouragement, reminding your child that they have the resources within themselves to tackle challenges and navigate life’s ups and downs.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE & RESISTANCE

By associating positive affirmations with challenging moments, children can learn to manage their emotions more effectively and develop greater emotional resilience. Affirmations can help children develop a positive outlook on life and build resilience in the face of challenges.

Affirmations in parenting can significantly benefit both parents and children. The whole point is to foster a positive mindset, encourage them to believe in themselves and have an inner voice that enhances emotional resilience. It can also improve parent-child relationships and promote a sense of well-being for all involved.

Being intentional is also about what we say to our children, and affirmations are a great way to lead them on a path of internal strength.
