“I thought my son had his career figured out… until one question changed everything.”
My son always said he wanted to study Sports Science at university.
He sounded confident.
I believed him.
Why wouldn’t I?
He’s always been sporty — captain of his football team for years. But somewhere along the line, he realised he probably wouldn’t play professionally. So the next logical step?
Sports Science.
It made sense… on the surface.
Then someone casually asked me:
“But what does he actually want to do with that?”
And I realised… I didn’t really know.
So I put my coaching hat on and asked him the same questions I ask my career discovery clients:
What we uncovered shocked both of us.
His choice wasn’t based on passion, purpose or long-term vision.
It was based on:
✔ Being good at sport
✔ Not wanting to let go of that identity
✔ Not knowing what else existed
After a few proper career discovery sessions, everything shifted.
My son went from Sports Science… to Mechanical Engineering.
Not because it sounded impressive —
But because it finally aligned with:
- how his brain works
- what he enjoys solving
- and the future he actually wants
That’s clarity.
That’s confidence.
That’s intentional decision-making.
And here’s the scary part…
📊 Over 40% of UK students say they regret their degree choice.
📊 1 in 3 students change or drop out of their course.
📊 Most teenagers choose careers based on:
- what they’re good at in school
- what their friends are doing
- or what sounds familiar
Not who they really are.
Some children seem “clear” about their career…
But often, that clarity is shaped by subtle external pressure:
parents, teachers, social media, or fear of disappointing others.
And many children?
They honestly have no clue.
That’s where career discovery coaching comes in.
Not to tell them what to be…
But to help them understand:
✔ who they are
✔ how they think
✔ what motivates them
✔ and what paths actually fit them
Before they lock themselves into years of study, debt, and regret.
If your child is:
– “set” on a career but can’t explain why
– stuck between options
– or has no idea at all
They don’t need more pressure.
They need clarity.
And that’s exactly what I help them build.
If your teen needs clarity, why not book in for a discovery call to discuss how I can help?
