Owen Cooper just made history as the youngest male to win an Emmy for Supporting Actor.
But what really caught my attention wasn’t just the award; it was his interview with Jimmy Kimmel, where he kept joking about having to do homework. Owen even admitted he hates school, especially maths.
That got me thinking… If he’s already a success, does he really need school?
The UK System: Education as a Non-Negotiable
In the UK, full-time education is compulsory until age 16. The idea is simple—every child deserves a foundation in literacy, numeracy, and life skills. Basic education is about more than exams; it’s about teaching structure, resilience, teamwork, and problem-solving. These are skills you carry long after you’ve forgotten algebra or Shakespeare.
But here’s the catch: is the system truly built for everyone?
When Talent Doesn’t Fit the Classroom
Some young people, like Owen, shine in spaces that aren’t traditionally academic—arts, sports, entrepreneurship, creativity. Yet too often, the message they hear in school is: “If you’re not excelling here, you’re failing.”
That’s damaging. Success is not limited to wearing a school uniform. Success can show up on a stage, in a studio, on a pitch, or in a workshop.
So the bigger question is: how do we celebrate and nurture those gifts without making young people feel lesser for not fitting neatly into the classroom box?
Why Basic Education Still Matters
Even so, let’s not dismiss the importance of school completely. At its best, school provides more than facts and grades:
- It teaches how to communicate and collaborate.
- It builds discipline and consistency.
- It offers exposure to different perspectives and opportunities.
Owen may hate maths—but the discipline of showing up, sticking with it, and navigating challenges has value. The balance lies in giving children the foundation they need without crushing their individuality.
The Real Debate: What Is School For?
So here’s the debate I want to start:
- What is the true purpose of school in today’s world?
- Should every child be forced through the same mould, or is it time to rethink education altogether?
- How do we prepare young people for success in a world where talent and innovation are just as important as exam results?
Owen Cooper’s Emmy reminds us that success can come in many forms. The real challenge for us—as parents, educators, and society—is making sure our education system recognises that too.
What do you think? Is school still serving young people the way it should, or is it overdue for a redesign?
