National Make Your What Day 😒?

Did you know today is National Make Your Bed Day. Cute idea, right? Except if you’re a parent, every day is already National Remind-Your-Kid-To-Make-Their-Bed Day.

Because let’s be honest — kids and beds have a complicated relationship. They love sleeping in them, jumping on them, and using them as storage for half their wardrobe… but actually making them? That’s apparently cruel and unusual punishment.

Why We Care So Much

It’s not really about the perfectly smoothed duvet. (Let’s be real, most kids’ beds look like a wrestling match happened under the covers anyway.)
It’s about what it teaches: responsibility, starting the day with a small win, and maybe — just maybe — proving that your child is capable of doing one thing without you hovering.

And it’s not just us saying this. Studies show that people who make their bed daily are 19% more likely to report better sleep and 71% more likely to feel happier overall. (Which makes sense… a tidy bed does feel like one corner of life under control.)

The Morning Struggle (A Familiar Script)

  • You: “Make your bed before school!”

  • Child: “Why? I’m just going to mess it up again tonight!”

  • You: deep breath, counting to ten, resisting the urge to explain that by this logic we should also stop brushing our teeth.

Celebrate the Imperfect Wins

Here’s the trick: don’t aim for hotel standards. If the duvet is covering 70% of the mattress and the pillow is somewhere in the postcode of the bed — call it a win. Praise the effort. Progress over perfection, always.

Because for kids, making the bed isn’t about crisp corners; it’s about learning ownership and starting their day with a sense of accomplishment. And for us? It’s about being able to walk past their room without breaking into a stress rash.

The Real Parenting Hack

So, this National Make Your Bed Day, forget Instagram-worthy bedrooms. Let’s celebrate the messy attempts, the half-hearted tucks, and even the wrinkled duvets. Because every time our kids pull those covers up, they’re not just tidying a bed, they’re building a habit, a sense of responsibility, and maybe even setting themselves up for a better day.

And if they don’t? Well, science says making our own bed boosts happiness, so worst case — at least we’ll sleep well tonight.
